In the Philippines, since it is a tropical country, there are many delicious kinds of seafood I ate. But there is one particular fish dish that is popular and delicious. Bangus is one of my favorite Filipino seafood dishes in the Philippines, which is best to eat with rice.

I noticed here in the Philippines, bangus can be cooked in many ways. You can either deep fry in oil, grill it in a fire, baked in the oven or you can make a bangus sisig, which is a mix of chopped milkfish, onions, and green chilies.

In this post, I will be showing my easy yet delicious recipe for Filipino Baked Bangus that I learned from my mother’s cooking.

Recipe Ingredients

The recipe ingredients of baked bangus is easy since you only need few ingredients for this milkfish filipino dish.

BONELESS MILKFISH: I recommend that you buy a milkfish that is deboned since it is easier to bake. What’s better is that you can enjoy eating your baked milkfish without worrying about bones. In the Philippines, you can find in it any grocery or supermarket since it is a popular Filipino fish. If you are living abroad, you can find them in any Filipino grocery store.

VEGETABLES AND HERBS: I add chopped tomatoes & onions and grated ginger in bangus. They make your baked fish very flavorful and delicious.

SOY SAUCE: This is a very important Filipino condiment sauce that helps season the bangus. In most Asian cuisines, this is used as an alternative to salt since it contains a high sodium content.

SALT AND LEMON: Now you might wonder why do I used salt when I already have soy sauce that is already salty. I used salt to rub my milkfish to remove the fishy odor, which I leave it for 5 minutes before washing them out with water. In addition to that, after washing out the salt, I drizzle it with lemon and rub it on the fish to help further remove the smell of my milkfish. Unlike salt, you don’t need to wash out the lemon with water.

Cooking Instruction

Cooking the Baked Bangus is one of the easiest fish recipes I made since you only mix the ingredients on the bangus, and then transfer into the oven.

Firstly, add the chopped onions & tomatoes, grated ginger, and soy sauce into the large bowl. Gently stir to mix.

Next, transfer them into the bangus. Make sure you fully spread the milkfish. Start to preheat the oven at 200 C to 400 F. While the oven is preheating, cover the oven tray with aluminum foil. Brush it with vegetable oil before putting the bangus to prevent sticking on the tray.

Lastly, transfer the milkfish into the oven. Baked it for 30 to 40 minutes or until it looks cooked.

1. What do I eat my baked bangus with?

This Filipino bangus is best to eat with white rice and dipping sauce mix with soy sauce, calamansi and Thai chilli. You can also serve this milkfish with other vegetables side dishes or chicken inasal, which blends really well.

2. What other vegetables or herbs I can add aside from tomatoes and onions?

In your baked milkfish, you can add celery, garlic, or chillies if you like it spicy.

A delicious Filipino Baked Bangus which is an oven baked milkfish recipe topped with onions, tomatoes, ginger and soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole boneless Bangus (Milkfish)

  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup chopped red onions

  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce

  • Salt and Lemon for cleaning and removing the odor of the fish.

Directions

  • Add the chopped tomatoes & onions, and grated ginger in a large bowl.
  • Add soy sauce in the same bowl, and use the spoon to stir to mix
  • After it is mixed, spread them on the milkfish using the spoon
  • Preheat the oven to 200 C or 400 F. In the meantime, cover the oven tray with the aluminum foil. Rub the foil with vegetable oil to prevent sticking the bangus.
  • Put the Bangus on the tray, and transfer it on the oven.
  • Baked it for 30 to 40 minutes or until it has a nice brown color. Once done, serve it with rice and dipping sauce. Enjoy!
